System for Detecting Vehicle Features from Low Quality Data

The paper presents a system that recognizes the make, colour and type of the vehicle. The classification has been performed using low quality data from real-traffic measurement devices. For detecting vehicles’ specific features three methods have been developed. They employ several image and signal recognition techniques, e.g. Mamdani Fuzzy Inference System for colour recognition or Scale Invariant Features Transform for make identification. The obtained results are very promising, especially because only on-site equipment, not dedicated for such application, has been employed. In case of car type, the proposed system has better performance than commonly used inductive loops. Extensive information about the vehicle can be used in many fields of Intelligent Transport Systems, especially for traffic supervision. Exploring the Effects of a Convergance Intervention on Ideation Artifacts: A Multi-Group Field Study

Information technology professionals frequently need to reduce and clarify ideas. The convergence patterns of collaboration-reduce and clarify are key in helping a group focus effort on issues that are worthy of further attention. This study furthers understanding convergence patterns by exploring and characterizing the effects of a FastFocus intervention on an ideation artifact. Researchers conducted an observational case study of executives and staff addressing a real task within a large it intensive organization. Three sets of artifacts were analyzed from three groups. Analysis of the problem statements generated during a problem identification and clarification session revealed several implications about convergence interventions. The FastFocus thinkLet reduced the number of concepts from 620 down to 145, a reduction of 76%. Ambiguity dropped from 55% in the ideation artifact to 6% in the converged artifact. Implications for brainstorming instructions were identified that may contribute to reduced ambiguity in ideation artifacts

Post-alpine tectonics of the Upper Nysa Kłodzka Graben : a reply

The paper aims to answer the critical remarks presented by Don and Wojewoda (in this issue) related to our papers published in Acta Montana (Badura et al., 2002, Badura et al., 2003). Answering those we have noticed that the terms brachysyncline and brachyanticline are improper with regard to the young Alpine rebuilding of the Upper Nysa Kłodzka Graben. In this paper we present the basic reasons for our hypothesis of young tectonic movements in the studied area more widely. Our morphotectonic analyses are based on the digital elevation models (DEM) and the electroresistance survey of the researched area located near Kamienna and north of Długopole Zdrój. The results of our research show that despite of the long history of the geological studies - longer than 100 years, the region is still a very challenging research area. In this paper we point out that application of the DEM and electroresistivity methods gives the new important results. Those should definitely be taken into consideration together with palaeontological research and geological mapping. We really wonder that the authors of the critical paper unequivocally negate the results of our studies and suggest that the continuation of such research and geodetic survey in the area is aimless

Is Participation in Organized Leisure-Time Activities Associated with School Performance in Adolescence?

BACKGROUND:Organized leisure-time activities (OLTA) have been identified as a context suitable for improvement of school performance. This study aimed to assess the associations between participation in OLTA and school engagement, school-related stress, academic achievement and whether these associations differ by specific pattern of OLTA participation, gender and age. Furthermore, it assessed whether OLTA participants are more likely to acquire support for schoolwork from outside the family. METHODS:The sample concerned 10,483 adolescents (49.2% boys) aged 11, 13 and 15 from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children data collection in 2014 in the Czech Republic. Logistic regressions adjusted for gender and age were used to analyse the associations between participation in OLTA and four education-related outcomes. RESULTS:Participation in OLTA was associated with higher school engagement, lower levels of school-related stress and better academic achievement regardless of gender and age. The strongest associations were observed for adolescents involved in various types of OLTA concurrently, with odds ratios ranging from 1.34 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.17-1.54) for lower school-related stress to 1.97 (95% CI 1.73-2.25) for above-average academic achievement. OLTA participants were also more likely to have a non-familial person to help them with schoolwork, though this association was weaker in 15-year-olds. CONCLUSION:Youth involvement in OLTA is linked to general better school performance and attachment to school. Adolescents participating in more activities at the same time have the best school performance

Epidemiologic characteristics of amniotic band sequence with limb malformations without body wall defect: data from the Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations

Abstract Amniotic Band Sequence (ABS) is a rare disruptive condition, with a variable spectrum of congenital defects caused by fibrous bands emerging as a result of amniotic rupture in the first trimester of gestation. Several factors, such as young parental age, primigravidity, febrile maternal illness, and drug use in the first trimester, were postulated to have substantial influence on ABS prevalence rate. We aimed our study to determine the prevalence of ABS with limb defects, but no body wall affectation, in a Polish population. We also examined the influence of different parental, gestational and environmental factors on the ABS prevalence value, and assessed the rate of gestational complications associated with this disorder. Among 1 706 639 births surveilled between 1998 and 2005, 36 liveborn infants with ABS-L were reported to the Polish Registry of Congenital Malformations, giving a global prevalence for a Polish population of 1 per 47 619 livebirths. We found that young maternal age, young paternal age, and primigravidity significantly increase the risk of ABS-L, when their effect was analyzed independently. However, because of a close relationship of these variables, we analyzed their mutually adjusted effect using conditional logistic regression models, and found that young maternal age proved the strongest risk factor for ABS-L (p = 0.0508). The condition was also more prevalent in infants with low birthweight (OR = 5.71; p &lt; 0.0001). Since gestational complications are often relevant to maternal age and birth order, we introduced an adjustment for these variables, and found that respiratory tract infections and vaginal bleeding/spotting convey approximately fourfold increased risk of ABS-L (OR = 3.72/p = 0.0058 and OR = 3.70/p = 0.0014 respectively)
